Introduction to Arabic Grammar for Beginners

Browse through our different programs

Arabic grammar is the key that unlocks deeper understanding of the Qur’an. While learning Arabic may seem difficult at first, it becomes easier with correct foundations and patience.

Allah revealed the Qur’an in clear Arabic:
“Indeed, We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur’an so that you may understand.”
— Surah Yusuf 12:2

Why Grammar Matters

Without grammar, meanings can be misunderstood.
Grammar helps you:

  • Understand sentence structure
  • Distinguish subject from object
  • Recognize commands, questions, and descriptions

Even basic grammar improves Qur’anic comprehension.

The Three Types of Words in Arabic

Arabic words fall into three categories:

1️ Ism (Noun)

Examples: Allah, kitab (book), qalb (heart)

2️ Fi‘l (Verb)

Examples: kataba (he wrote), ya‘lamu (he knows)

3️ Harf (Particle)

Examples: fi (in), min (from), ila (to)
Every Arabic sentence is built from these.

Gender in Arabic

Arabic nouns are:

  • Masculine
  • Feminine

Many feminine nouns end with ـة (taa marbuta), but not all. Learning this helps with correct reading and understanding.

Singular, Dual, and Plural

Arabic has:

  • Singular (one)
  • Dual (two)
  • Plural (three or more)

The dual form is unique to Arabic and appears frequently in the Qur’an.

Start Small and Stay Consistent

Do not rush advanced topics.

  • Learn basic patterns first
  • Practice through Qur’anic examples
  • Review regularly

The scholars emphasized gradual learning.

Final Encouragement

Arabic grammar is not only an academic skill — it is a means of worship when used to understand Allah’s words. Every effort made for the Qur’an is rewarded.
